At St Moritz in Switzerland this weekend, the locals are hosting a bobsleighing competition with a difference – there's no bob.

At the International Bobrun Skating tournament, 150 licensed ice-hockey players skate down the illuminated bob-run at the winter resort. There only appears to be one rule - the first team to get all their players across the finishing line is the winner.

Hence the ice-hockey players can do what they're best at and rough each other up as they surge down the bob-run - elbow room is tight and so falls are commonplace.

Spectators often state that watching some of the world's best skaters negotiate the spectacular horseshoe bend is a thrilling experience. Some of the more skilful skaters can cut the curve some two metres above the bottom of the run and steer exactly the same course as the bobsleigh.

St Mortiz is not cheap but the extra you pay is made up for in glamour and top of the range facilities. As well as the usual skiing and snow boarding, the resort hosts a vast array of other pursuits such as snow golf, cricket and polo.
