Mild weather, the Columbus Day holiday and the beauty of natural attractions such as the Finger Lakes have been identified as a contributing factor to increased tourism in the upstate New York area, it has been reported.

Within the region, New York City obtains 62 per cent of every tourist dollar spent in the state while other popular attractions in the region that make the most of tourism cash include Long Island, the Hudson Valley and Finger Lakes, according to the Star Gazette.

Around $43 billion (£21 billion) in income was made in New York on tourism in 2005, according to the publication.

The newspaper states that these figures may increase due to continued development of wine trails and more accommodation in the Watkins Glen State Park.

Some 14 counties exist in the Finger Lakes region, according to the area's tourism website.

Consumers wishing to visit the New York region may wish to take advantage of competitive travel insurance deals available from InsureandGo.
