The area around Cape Tribulation in Northern Australia could be the next hotspot for backpackers, according to one travel expert.

Recent reports by Australia's tourism board showed a changing pattern among backpackers during their travels to the country, as they were willing to discover more new places rather than sticking to regions previously popular such as New South Wales or Queensland.

South Australia emerged as the new hotspot for the adventurous, with a 13 per cent year-on-year growth.

But a travel expert has argued that improvements in the region's infrastructure could make North Australia equally attractive.

The area offers the unique meeting point of two World Heritage sites, Cape Tribulation, where the Great Barrier Reef and the Draintree rainforest.

"Tribulation is fast becoming a very popular tourist destination and the improvements made recently to the roads and other infrastructure has only made it more attractive," said Medha Ruby.

The area also features wildlife that cannot be found anywhere else, such as the Bennett's tree kangaroo or the Daintree river ringtail possum, Ms Ruby added.

It was also the place where Captain Cook was forced to land in 1770 after his ship encountered problems in the Great Barrier Reef area.
