Left-handed drivers have a natural advantage over their right-handed counterparts when it comes to driving safely, the AA has suggested.

New research from the car insurance provider has shown that 57 per cent of left-handed drivers passed their test first time, making them ten per cent more likely to do so than right-handers.

Released yesterday, the findings came ahead of Left-Handers Day 2008, which will see millions of southpaws celebrating around the world.

Simon Douglas, director of the AA Driving School, commented: "Scientists have hypothesised for years that left-handers are quicker to learn than right-handers and, looking back through history, some of the most important drivers in the world have been left-handed."

Other recent research from the AA has shown that when it comes to caravan disappearances, the Midlands is the Bermuda triangle of the UK, with ten per cent more motorhomes going missing here than in the rest of the UK.
