The amount of people driving in Wales without insurance has "shot up" in the past year according to a report.

Wales Online states that there are now 84,000 driving in the region without adequate car insuranceand that in some areas 16 per cent of all vehicles have no cover.

During the last 12 months the number of people without car insurance in Wales has gone up by 20,000. Last year there were around 64,000 drivers with no form of cover.

Splott in Cardiff is the most uninsured area according to statistics from the Motor Insurers' Bureau with other "blackspots" including Newport, Mountain Ash, Swansea and Ferndale, where at least one in every ten drivers has no insurance.

The figures show that motorists that drive with no insurance are ten times more likely to drink drive and three times more likely to be convicted of careless driving.

In related news, the BBC has recently reported that texting while driving is worse than using a car while under the influence of drink or drugs, according to research from the RAC Foundation.
