Travellers over the age of 65 are booking more adventure holidays, a new survey has revealed.

The study by Omnibus Shearings Holidays showed that one in 12 of all over-65's surveyed were looking to add an activity or adventure element to their breaks.

The over-65's were in fact the second group least likely to choose a relaxing holiday, behind the youngest age band of 16 to 24-year olds.

But the age group that takes the most holidays are the more cautious 45 to 55-year-olds, with 10 per cent of them booking more than four every year.

'I thought it fascinating how many over-65s are looking for action and adventure in their holidays and no longer just want to fly and flop,' said Karen Gee, sales and marketing director for Shearings Holidays, to magazine Travel Weekly.

Related research from Axa showed that trekking and walking were the most popular types of adventure holidays, with men more likely to make them part of their time off than women.

And in the past five years it was estimated that one million people claimed to have suffered an accident or injury during an activity holiday.
