One in seven people have admitted to driving without valid car or van insurance, it has been noted.

According to a new study released moneysupermarket.com, 15 per cent of motorists had committed the offence in their own vehicle, while nine per cent of drivers had driven uninsured in someone else's automobile.

Younger drivers were revealed to be the worst offenders, as 23 per cent of people in their 20s included in the study and 20 per cent of thirty-somethings admitting to driving uninsured.

Richard Mason, director of insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said: "Anyone who drives without insurance, no matter how short the distance and whether it's their car or someone else's, is breaking the law."

He added that as uninsured drivers cost the industry £500 million each year, those driving without insurance are pushing up the cost of premiums for other law-abiding motorists.

The Department for Transport notes that under British law all drivers are required to be insured against third-party risks before driving a motor vehicle.

InsureandGo offers competitive car and van insurance policies for those requiring cover.
