A total of one in six (16 per cent) of those who have visited a skiing resort never set foot on the piste, according to recent research.

Commissioned by price comparison site moneysupermarket.com, the poll indicated that almost a quarter (22 per cent) of people from the north of the country do not spend any time skiing, compared to eight per cent of Londoners.

Peter Gerrard, head of insurance research at the site, commented that those who actually do ski cannot afford to skimp on travel insurance.

"While some people may not realise they need extra cover for winter sports, it seems many are prepared to take a huge financial risk, both to themselves and potentially to other skiers," he said.

A recent study by Halifax suggested that 38 per cent of skiers and snowboarders were not physically prepared for their winter holiday last year.

Consumers planning a trip abroad, such as to enjoy snow sports, may find they benefit from contacting InsureandGo to obtain more information on travel and ski insurance.
