A third of Britons do not have any
home insurance even as the risk of flooding rises, a study has found.
Research by the Fair Investment Company (FIC) discovered that 38 per cent of people polled have no home cover.
But ten per cent of all British households are at serious risk of flooding.
Of those with home insurance, those in London and Wales are least likely to have flood cover, even though the latter has an average rainfall of 3,000 millilitres a year.
The FIC quoted statistics from Homecheck which found that property, land and assets worth £214 billion are at risk from flooding in England and Wales.
Fairinvestment.co.uk spokesperson Rachael Stiles said the number of uninsured people was "quite a surprise" and stressed that such cover is important.
Meanwhile, insurance provider Direct Line has welcomed planning efforts to manage flood risks in principle.
But it remained concerned that enforcing planning permission for such low-level building might be problematic.
