Consumers who shop online have been informed that online payment processes are "extremely secure".

According to HSBC, there are very few people who have experience of card fraud on the internet, or indeed, know someone who has.

In a recent statement, a spokesman for the group commented: "Fraud is far more likely to happen if someone has got your details out of your bin, if they have been a little careless with their bank statements or other personal information."

Comparing online payments with cheques, he advised that while both are secure options, there are certain fraud risks associated with both that consumers should be mindful of.

Statistics from Apacs, the UK payments association, have shown that the total volume of cheques processed declined 7.5 per cent over the course of the past year.

Meanwhile, plastic cards account for 65 per cent of all purchases made.
