The recently announced Open Skies Agreement the United States and the European Union will offer cheaper deals for consumers, according to a spokesperson from the Air Transport Users Council (AUC).

Industry affairs manager for the group asserted that a liberalisation of the aviation industry between America and Europe would encourage competition and deliver cheaper flight deals as a result.

"There are cheaper air fares because there is more competition. It means that you have more choice of subject and airlines that are doing the routes, which ultimately means cheaper fares," he explained.

He added that when a similar agreement was implemented among European states, there was a dramatic drop in the price of flights to countries included in the deal. The AUC expects similar falls in the cost of transatlantic flights as a result of the Open Skies agreement.

The deal was signed in April 2007 and will come in to effect in March of this year, at which point US and EU operators to offer flights to any city throughout the two regions.
