The Sydney Opera House has been named the top modern wonder of the world in a nationwide poll.

Conducted by Halifax, the auditorium was followed by the Eiffel Tower and the Christ Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, which rounded out the top three.

While British landmarks were absent from the global list, a separate survey of UK wonders voted Stone Henge the top attraction, followed by Giant's Causeway and Big Ben.

Other prominent modern wonders in the worldwide list included the Palm in Dubai and Ground Zero in New York.

Brits also showed a preference for grand designs, with CN Tower in Toronto and the Petronas Twin Towers also making the list.

Vicky Watson, spokesperson for Halifax Travel Insurance, commented: "Whether people are travelling to foreign shores or staying within the UK, we would urge people to consider whether their chosen travel insurance is adequate for their particular trip."

In a separate statement, Halifax has also recently advised students heading off to university to consider taking out a separate home insurance policy.

InsureandGo offers tailored travel insurance options, as well as a range of home policies.
