The B1257 from Stokesley to Hemsley will be the target of an operation to limit the impact of speeding drivers, the Hambleton district council has reported.

The stretch of road has seen two motorcyclists die in separate accidents already this year, with a further three people having been seriously injured.

Operation Siren, run by members of the emergency service and the Hambleton Community Safety Partnership, will stop speeding drivers and give them a choice of a fixed fine of £60 or spending 20 minutes being educated on the dangers of bad driving.

According to the council, so far 25 motorists had opted for road instruction at Chop Gate Village Hall to see films on the dangers of road accidents as well as having a chat with officers.

Two drivers which were deemed to be driving too fast for the education option were given the penalty ticket straight away.

Three further tickets were issued for offences such as not wearing a seatbelt, illegal exhaust and illegal registration plates.

'This stretch of road is a hotspot in Hambleton – we have had too many accidents along it already this year.

'We are trying to educate all road users but especially talk to them about motor cyclists – which often come off worse in these accidents,' said Hambleton community safety partnership office and road policing sergeant Claire Sawyer.
