Older people could be putting their home insurance in jeopardy by taking on DIY jobs which are beyond their abilities, therefore the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) has advised over-50s to call in the professionals.

Andrew Leech, director at NHIC, said that projects such as roofing, plumbing and electricals should be left to qualified tradesmen, mainly due to safety reasons and the risks involved to both the person carrying out the work and the property itself.

He commented: "There are certain things which the average DIY person can do without any problem at all, but if they are talking about major projects, then really they should involve a professional."

A spokesperson for Friends of the Earth also recently noted that carrying out green home improvements could help to create up to 70,000 new jobs in the UK, due to a rise in the number of people looking to have work carried out on their homes.

InsureandGo offers home insurance to cover against any accidents during home improvement projects.
