There is a growing over-fifties tourism market as the generation shows signs of being more adventurous, the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) said today.
According to spokesman Sean Tipton, over-fifties are 'much more adventurous' than other generations and more likely to 'do something involving activity'.
There has also been a growing market in 'senior gap years', with older people looking to travel the world and experience exotic places.
Cruises and beach holidays, though still popular with the over-fifties generation, have lost some of the holiday market to more off-the-beaten-track travelling opportunities.
'They're not so keen on just sitting on the beach getting a suntan - they want to go and do something. That's partly because they're generally very well travelled. People have been going abroad in large numbers since the 1960s,' said Mr Tipton.
Trekking to Nepal or a trip round the Far East are the sorts of holidays increasingly being sought after by the adventurous older generations.
