More than 24 million Brits are driving round in dirty, cluttered cars, which could pose a threat to themselves and those around them according to a car insurance provider

Research by LV= suggests that only 11 per cent of people wash their motor every week, while half a million road users admit to having never cleaned their automobile.

As such, drivers may face car insurance claims, as vehicles cluttered with items such as mobile phones and mp3 players could attract the attention of thieves.

Furthermore, dirty windscreens and windows could result in a decreased ability to see the road and raise the likelihood of a crash occurring.

Spokesperson for LV= Emma Hoyler comments: "Making sure that your windscreen, lights and mirrors are clean before setting off on a journey should be second nature to motorists, but our research shows that this doesn't appear to be the case despite it being a legal requirement."

Meanwhile, recent research by Admiral suggests that households with two or more cars are 22 per cent less likely to be involved in a crash than those with only one.
