A total of 13 per cent of the British public believe that a current or former pet was a reincarnation, according to a leading pet insurance firm.

Over a quarter (27 per cent) of believers think a spirit of a previous pet has returned, while a similar amount (23 per cent) suppose that a person they previously knew has returned in animal form, research by Petplan indicates.

Head of marketing at the firm Simon Wheeler commented: "Reincarnation is a commonly held belief globally so perhaps it's no surprise that so many people think their pet may have lived before - though quite how you'd know a fish was a reincarnation I can only guess."

In related news, pet insurance provider NFU Mutual recently advised owners to keep an extra close eye on their animals at Christmas time to ensure that they remain safe during the festivities.
