Pets should have pet insurancein the first year of their life as it is possibly the most dangerous time for them, an expert as asserted.

John Bower, the former president of the British Veterinary Association (BVA), also said that pets were most likely to suffer from medical problems when they reach eight years old so owners should keep insurance going from then.

He also pointed out that it was important for owners to make any existing medical conditions clear to insurers.

The People's Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) has released research claiming that the UK's pets are getting bigger.

Places in the north west have the largest amount of overweight animals, at 31 per cent, with the Midlands and Scotland seeing the biggest rise in animal obesity over the last year.

In related news, the Guardian recently reported that pets in the UK were increasingly falling victim to illnesses linked to obesity in humans including arthritis, asthma, diabetes and liver and heart problems.

PDSA told the newspaper that owners were feeding their pets an "astonishing diet" of junk, including crisps, curry, pizza, ice cream, cake and sweets.
