Pay as you save (PAYS) could become an integral part of getting more homeowners to upgrade their property with sustainable energy technology, it has been claimed.
Gordon Miller, founder of whatgreenhome.com, said the government-run scheme could help make sustainable home improvements more likely to happen across the UK as it highlights the monetary savings these amendments to property can deliver.
He commented: "People will always react to money; that is the main driver for the CO2 argument. You have got to incentivise people. Lots of people will think: 'I'm all for this. I want to do my bit for the environment, but not at a cost to myself'."
Homeowners in Birmingham, Sunderland, Stroud and the London Borough of Sutton will test out new ways to finance whole house energy makeovers under the government's £4 million PAYS scheme.
A total of around 500 homes across England will take part in the trial, with those involved able to take out loans for sustainable home improvements for no up-front costs.
