A project has begun in a district of Pakistan which is aimed at developing the area's tourism sector.

The United Nations-backed scheme will establish a three-star hotel in the region of Mansehra with the capacity to accommodate over 150 guests simultaneously.

Newspaper Dawn reports that the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (Unido) will also aid the region in enhancing its infrastructure following an earthquake in 2005.

The publication notes that some 36,000 tourists visited the region in 2004, but this number fell following the earthquake.

It is hoped that the new project will boost numbers back to previous levels.

Tourist attractions located in Pakistan include the Sufi Shrines, Shah Faisal Masjid, Lok Virsa Heritage Museum and the Kaghan Valley, a mountainous region which includes glaciers, streams and waterfalls.
