Parents who have their children insured on their insurance policies as named drivers have been urged to change the details to how the car is really used, according to a report.
Only Finance says that some parents insure their children as named drivers when they are in reality the main drivers of the vehicle, a method referred to as "fronting" by some insurers.
Fronting can also include hiding or changing the information about the user of the vehicle, such as concealing driving convictions or changing the "risk information" used by companies to determine insurance costs.
The website warns that this could backfire on the parents if a claim needed to be made on the
car insuranceand said parents should avoid doing it.
According to Only Finance children who leave the family home to study away at university are finding it more and more difficult to take their cars with them as insurance premiums are too costly.
A survey published by Young Marmalade recently said that teenagers who attend advanced driving programmes are three times less likely to have an accident than those who don't, as reported in the Ayrshire Post.
