The cost of a passport will increase in October, the Foreign Office has revealed.
This is the third price hike in the past two years for passports, costing an additional £6 to acquire one, from £66 to £72.
Passport prices were at £42 not long ago in December 2005, so that there has been a rise of about 70 per cent since then.
The same-day premium service that processes passports as quickly as possible will now cost £114, while the fast-track service in which the application takes only a week will also go up £6 to £97.
Child passports will only see a small £1 rise.
According to the Foreign Office, the rise in passport costs is due to increasing costs of providing consular assistance to Britons when they are abroad.
"British nationals make an estimated 65 million overseas trips a year. The majority of these, thankfully, are trouble free, but occasionally things do go wrong," said Foreign Office minister Lord Triesman.
