People who can afford it could consider extending their homes to get more space without having the hassle of moving house, it has been suggested.

Andrew Leech, the director of the National Home Improvement Council said that recent changes in rules surrounding planning permission could now ease the pressure on planning departments.

Under the new rules, homeowners could extend their properties without having to apply for planning permission, depending on whether the proposed improvements fit in with certain criteria.

Those wanting to put in a new drive or parking area over five metres will no longer need to obtain approval as long as they use surfaces that allow water to soak through.

Also, the new rules will allow permission to be granted for loft conversions and extensions based how big they will be. Now, any loft conversion between 40 and 50 metres will be automatically allowed to go ahead, as will one storey extensions up to three metres deep.

Those looking to make extensions to their property should ensure that they inform their home insuranceprovider and make sure the new part of their house is protected.
