People need to ensure they are covered by the right insurance in all aspects of their lives, as living without cover is like "walking a tightrope without a safety net", writes Sharon Griffiths for the Northern Echo.
Ms Griffiths urges students to check that their possessions are covered by the
home insuranceof the shared property they live in, pointing out that even though people may think they have nothing worth stealing in their home, replacing their possessions would in reality cost a "small fortune".
She goes on to say that you can insure against "all sorts of things" these days, but claims that many people continue to try and get away with not being adequately covered for events out of their control - especially when it comes to
travel insurance.
Suggesting that you can buy an entire years worth of
travel insurance for around £30, she points out that "thousands of daft people don't bother", perhaps underestimating the cost of falling ill abroad.
She also warned that commonly used European health cards "won't pay for hotel bills, taxis, phone calls. Neither will it pay for an air ambulance home".
In related news, Brits are being urged to check the validity of their European Health Insurance cards, with around 1.5 million due to expire at the end of this month.
