A new study by price comparison site moneysupermarket.com has highlited the need for proper cover of personal items while travelling.

Small everyday items such as sunglasses, wallets and digital cameras are the most likely to go missing or lost, it was reported.

One in eight British tourists last year had either lost an item or had one stolen while on holiday.

"With Brits taking advantage of low-cost flights and spending more time abroad, it is essential you are covered for cancellation, losing cash, public liability and emergency medical treatment," said Richard Mason, director of insurance for moneysupermarket.com.

Mr Mason said travel insurance was a priority but advised checking the small print to see if personal items are included and to check for any conditions or other exclusions.

Most travellers look mostly to personal safety when checking their travel insurance, as medical emergencies are the biggest cause of insurance claims, averaging more than £1,200.
