Brits planning to take out
holiday insurance for a trip to Peru have been advised there is more to see in the country than simply Machu Picchu.
Daniela Resenterra, spokesperson for PromPeru, said although the world heritage site is breathtaking, other attractions include the Amazonian city of Iquitos, while there are excellent water sports in the northern region of the country.
She commented: "There's loads to see in Peru. There's the Colca Canyons not very far from the Machu Picchu site in southern Peru. That's actually double the depth of the Grand Canyon."
According to recent reports in the media, days of heavy rain last month triggered up to 40 landslides in the country, one of which blocked the railway line between Machu Picchu and Cuzco.
A state of emergency was declared on January 25th and the government began airlifting local people to safety. It is believed it could take up to eight weeks to repair the damage.
