Taking out
pet insurance is an essential course of action for UK animal owners, Churchill has suggested.
Chris Price, head of insurance at the group, said that in worst case scenarios, those without cover have had to put pets to sleep because they could not afford the veterinary bills.
He added that as well as providing medical cover, pet policies can also provide assistance if an animal goes missing.
"The premium would pale into significance against a potential bill of thousands of pounds," he said.
Mr Price added that there was a particular need for animals susceptible to genetic conditions to be covered.
However, he concluded: "Even if your pet is not prone to any medical problems, insurance is still vital."
According to Animal Friends Insurance, it is estimated that one in three pet owners need to make a claim on their insurance policy each year, while veterinary bills are said to be rising by 12 per cent on annual basis.
