The potential benefits of pet insurance were recently highlighted in research by Sainsbury's Bank.

A survey carried out by the provider in recent days suggested that some 61 per cent of owners who have lost an animal since November 2002 have never been reunited with their four-legged friend.

However, the pet insurance provider suggests that some policies could supply help by providing financial assistance if an animal goes missing, which could be used to advertise and raise awareness of the loss.

Claire Moyles, pet insurance manager at Sainsbury's Finance, commented: "Should your animal go missing our advice is to act as quickly as possible and notify the police, rescue centres and your vet immediately."

In related news, Defaqto recently stated that individuals should not buy an animal without obtaining appropriate cover for it.

Consumers shopping around for pet insurance may find that they are able to get a competitive deal from InsureandGo.
