A new study has suggested that many Britons hold the misconception that taking out pet insurance for their animal is unnecessary.

Sainsbury's Finance reports that as many as 11 million UK residents who own a pet have not taken out cover to provide financial assistance in the event of loss, illness or injury.

Of those interviewed who had not taken out a policy, 50 per cent said that they did not feel it was needed, while a further eight per cent said that they did not need cover because their animal was healthy.

Steve Johnson, head of pet insurance at Sainsbury's Finance, reminded customers that most providers do not cover costs incurred as a result of ailments that existed prior to a policy being taken out.

"Taking a gamble and waiting until the "healthy" animal becomes ill before thinking about cover is not an option," he explained.

At the end of last month, Sainsbury's also issued a warning to consumers urging them not to underestimate the costs of pet ownership after a sharp increase in the number abandoned animals was reported.

InsureandGo offers competitive pet insurance cover to provide assurance in the event of loss, injury or illness.
