Pet owners have been warned that pet insurance is not always included in a home insurance policy.

A spokeswoman for the Association of British Insurers said that damage caused by pets is often not covered on a home insurance policy, so problems such as ripped carpets might not be insured against.

She commented that getting pet insurance is a wise move as otherwise people could be hit by bills stretching to thousands to treat a pet that has been injured or has an illness.

Pet insurance is important no matter what animal people have, she said, commenting that in particular, pet treatment after a road accident could be extremely costly.

She went on to say that genetic and hereditary conditions in animals should be mentioned when obtaining pet insurance cover.

Pet insurance from InsureandGo could prove to be essential cover should a family pet be injured in an accident and the treatment bills pile up.
