Round hounds and flabby cats are an increasingly large problem, according to the PDSA.
Jenny Davies, media and PR officer at the animal charity, states that as many as one in four cats and one in three dogs are currently diagnosed as being overweight.
She explains that this is an issue as obesity is linked to a number of other conditions such as heart disease, liver problems and diabetes.
"It also means that a pet has more difficulty exercising and being overweight can make any arthritic joints more painful," Ms Davies adds.
She notes that some pets are more susceptible to certain conditions than others, but that this may not necessarily be linked to the cost of a domestic animal's care.
For example, some dogs are at increased risk of developing hip and heart problems, adding that this is why it is important for people to research breeds of animal before purchasing one.
