Pet owners do not enjoy travel with pets

Travel is a hassle for many pet owners who find their holiday options limited, a new survey by travel community website TripAdvisor has revealed.

The survey was undertaken on the site's visitors, with 1,100 respondents in total, 700 of which were pet owners.

Only 16 per cent of those polled said they enjoyed taking their pets on holiday with them.

It showed that pet owners feel their choice of holiday and travel destination is restricted by their pets.

Slightly over half of all respondents, and 41 per cent of those who were British say they would never leave their pets behind and prefer taking them along on their travels.

But over a third reported they would take shorter holidays because and a further 25 per cent said they would take fewer holidays because of their pets.

And over 10 per cent said they do not go on vacation at all precisely because of their furry friends.

More than half of pet owners would like to stay only in accommodation that is pet-friendly, particularly dog owners as they need more space and upkeep, but close to 50 per cent of those surveyed said there were not enough hotels that catered to their needs.

Among the services that pet owners particularly looked to where a pet-sitting service, separate on-site kennels and pet bedding.

Best Western was celebrated as the hotel chain most friendly to animals, with 20 per cent of respondents revealing they resorted to smuggling their pets into hotels that didn't welcome them.
