A spokesperson from the Blue Cross has said that when it comes to pet insurance, dogs should be evaluated on behaviour as well as breed.

Laura Dobson has commented that because no particular type of canine is naturally aggressive, they should not be assessed on that basis, adding that environmental conditions are equally important for a dog's personality.

Her comments follow a recent call for a review of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991, which currently prohibits ownership of four types of dogs - the Pit Bull Terrier, the Japanese tosa, the Dogo Argentino and the Fila Brasileiro.

The Blue Cross is a charitable organisation that looks to improve living conditions for pets and promote companionship between animal and owner.

Ms Dobson added: "We would always urge people to be careful with their dogs, particularly around children ... But to judge dogs on an individual basis, very much based on their upbringing rather than their genetics."

InsureandGo offers a range of pet insurance policies to suit owners' requirements.
