Brits have been urged to keep their pets indoors this Bonfire Night as many animals can be scared by fireworks, leading to veterinary bills and costly pet insurance claims.

Sharon Comrie, manager of the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals' Petterden centre, told the Evening Telegraph that loud noises can spook animals easily and can also damage their hearing.

Ms Comrie said: "It's a miserable time for pet owners, especially [of] dogs, cats and rabbits that get really terrified."

Also, it is important for anyone planning a private bonfire to ensure they keep their animals indoors when it is lit.

Elsewhere, vet Dr Marty Becker recently told CNN that dog owners should seriously consider taking out pet insurance for their canine companions, as having this cover could not only help them to save money but could also mean the difference between life and death for the animal should it get ill or injured.

InsureandGo offers pet insurance at competitive prices for UK animal lovers.
