The Philippines posted a 'monumental' growth in visitor numbers since the start of the year, according to the country's tourism officials.

The south-east Asian holiday destination welcomed close to two million more foreigners in 2007 so far than in the previous year, with some estimating this figure will double by Christmas.

'2007 is proving to be a monumental year for the industry as this will be the first time that visitor arrivals will breach the 3.1 million mark,' said Joseph Ace Durano, tourism secretary for the Philippines.

Mr Durano argued that the surge in tourism was due to the strong partnership that had been formed between the private and public sectors in presenting the country as a major emerging sector for tourism.

And eco-tourism is thought to have been another main driver of visitor numbers, as the Philippines is proving attractive for those looking to take part in a 'green' adventure.

The country's Department of Environment and Natural Resources announced last week that it was preparing to transform volcanoes such as Mt Iraya into eco-tourism zones to boost the local economy.
