A scheme to advance rural tourism in the Madurai district of India is currently being developed, it has emerged.

The Hindu reports that the project will pay particular attention to the promotion of folk arts and the development of village infrastructure.

Locations with the potential for tourism development have been identified and local authorities have proposed a number of plans.

Collector S Jawahar told the publication that packages would include visits to temples, the organisation of exhibitions, sales of products made by local artisans and the development of rural ceremonies and other cultural activities.

Established attractions in Madurai include the Thirumalai Nayak Palace, the Ghandi Museum and the Meenakshi Temple, the latter of which is located on the banks of the River Vaigai.

Those planning a trip abroad, especially those who plan to venture off the established tourist trail, may find that they benefit from investing in a travel insurance policy from InsureandGo.
