A European wide campaign to limit the effects and raise awareness of drink and drug driving began last week.

The campaign is run as a cooperation of police forces across all member states of the European Union and follows the latest findings on drink and drug driving related deaths.

In the UK, one in seven driving accidents involve at least one driver that was over the alcohol limit.

Officers across England will be on high visibility patrols to do spot checks on drivers and be vigilant for any possible drunk driving incidents.

“Whilst going out and about this summer think before getting into a vehicle and starting the ignition. Its takes some time for alcohol to leave the body so the morning after you could still be over the legal limit,” said Neil Fillingham of Humberside police.

It is hoped the campaign will raise awareness of the issue and limit deaths caused by these sort of accidents, which continue to be amongst the most common on British roads.
