The Volkswagen Polo has been named the Car of the Year 2010.
A total of 59 jurors from 23 European countries cast their votes for the award, with the Polo scoring 347 points to beat its closest rival, the Toyota IQ, to the coveted prize.
Hakan Matson, president of the jury, said at the awards ceremony in Madrid: "It was the Polo's comprehensive safety equipment and its advanced range of engines that impressed us the most."
The Polo was also recently named Best Car 2009 by Auto Motor Sport magazine and also received the Auto Trophy from German publication Autozeitung. Volkswagen last won the Car of the Year award in 1992 for its Golf model.
Elsewhere, the Mazda 3 was recently awarded a five-star Euro Ncap rating, making it one of the safest vehicles to purchase in the compact market.
The car followed in the footsteps of one of the company's other models - the Mazda 6 - which achieved the same feat earlier this year.
