Plans by Air New Zealand to offer a service from Paraparaumu airport have been identified as having the potential to boost tourism in the area, it has been reported.

Regional tourist manager for economic development agency Nature Coast Chris Barber stated that tourist numbers would double within three years of the flights starting, according to the Dominion Post.

Mr Barber added: "Our prediction [of] doubling visitor numbers as a result of the flights would mean another NZ $184 million (£68.7 million) per annum - that is an extra NZ $3.5 million a week being injected into the local economy."

Some NZ $450 million is planned to be spent upgrading the airport and a nearby business park, the publication reports.

Paraparaumu is located on the Kapiti Coast in New Zealand's Wellington area.
