Potholes were responsible for around £320 million worth of damage to cars last year, according to new research.

The 2007 Alarm survey conducted by Warranty Direct revealed that this was ten times the amount that local councils were spending on filling the potholes.

It estimated that local governments spent £33 million filling 589,000 of the nuisances last year.

"Once again, this report highlights that the balance needs to be addressed for the motorist," said Duncan McClure Fisher, managing of Warranty Direct.

"The state of the nation's roads is a growing problem and one that won't disappear unless there is a dramatic redirection of funds, and a tightening of maintenance, policed by the councils and the Department for Transport as a whole."
