Rome is to be the site of the very first international football tournament comprising solely of Catholic priests and seminaries beginning on Saturday.

Clerics from 50 nations will step down from the altar and take to the football pitch this weekend

Edio Costantini, head of the Italian Sporting Centre which organises the event, said:
"We want to raise the awareness of current and future leaders of parishes and Church communities of the educational and pastoral importance of sport," reports Reuters.

Rome is one of the most popular European capitals for city breaks. It contains some of the most important political and cultural centres of Europe's long history and has been a top destination for British travellers for centuries.

Of the Roman remains worth visiting, the Colosseum stands out as the most imposing and awe-inspiring, while the Pantheon and Appian Way also provide an insight into life 2,000 years ago.

From the Renaissance period, visitors will not want to miss the Basilica di San Pietra (St Peter's Basilica), where Michaelangelo painted his most famous work and the Trevi Fountain, located at the foot of the famous Spanish Steps.
