As Guy Fawkes' night approaches, Halifax general insurance is advising consumers to ensure that their home and pets are protected.

Research by the insurer indicates that almost six million Britons are willing to use accelerants such as petrol to make sure their fire goes with bang.

However, such practices could result in health and safety risks for consumers, their homes and their pets.

Vicky Emmott, spokesperson for Halifax, states that it is important to double-check policies to ensure that homes are covered in case of fire damage.

"Those with cats and dogs may also want to consider pet insurance to protect their furry friends from the potential dangers of bonfire night," she adds.

Leading pet charity PDSA recently advised consumers that as the weather grows worse in the run-up to Christmas, they should ensure that their animals are not allowed to become too cold and risk hypothermia.

Consumers wishing to shop around for home or pet insurance may find that they can obtain a competitive deal from InsureandGo.
