Pet owners are being reminded of the dangers posed by leaving an animal in the car for long periods of time.

With temperatures up to record heights last month and the reported effects of global warming set to bring summer temperatures to some of the hottest ever, leaving pets in cars can seriously damage their health.

The Kennel Club has warned that even leaving a dog or cat in the car while popping to the shops for a few minutes could lead to heart stroke, for example.

Temperatures inside a car are much higher than outside and animals' fur means their body temperature rises more than a human's would if left in the car.

The pets could have to withstand heat of up to 49 degrees Celsius within ten minutes of remaining in a car, even with the windows slightly open, website Pet Healthcare reports.

Even travelling in cars in the soaring temperatures could put your pet's health at risk.

Motorists are advised to check the weather conditions before setting off on a journey and weigh up whether it is necessary for the pet to come along.

Pet owners should ensure their animals are not left to sit in direct sunlight and plenty of stops are made on the journey.

You should never leave a dog unattended in a car, but take them out and leave them in a secure place.
