For those who are considering a cycling holiday in the coming months, it has been advised that ensuring all necessary safety precautions are met is a vital part of the process.

Chris Ford, managing director of Cycle Active, the cycle holiday and mountain bike training company, has said that along with usual considerations such as passport, travellers' cheques and tickets, those embarking on a cycling holiday also need to think about other safety considerations such as cycling helmets.

"You need a cycle helmet - and one with a peak. A lot of people get them without a peak but it keeps the sun off of your face," he explained.

He also said that a sturdy pair of sunglasses would also be very useful, both in protecting from glare and keeping dirt out of the eyes. Cycle gloves and shorts were also said to be important.

For those on cycle tours, the CycleActive website asserts that it is important that all UK guides are professionally trained, with bilingual tour operators offered for international trips.
