The Queen is to officially open the new terminal five building at Heathrow airport today.

The opening comes just one day after a security breach disrupted flights to and from the European hub.

Operated solely by British Airways, the Terminal Five building is expected to be capable of handling 30 million passengers per year and has taken six years to be completed, at a cost of £4.3 billion.

It will breathe new life into Heathrow, allowing us to continue our transformation of the rest of the airport," said BAA chairman Nigel Rudd.

Agence France Press notes that the UK's busiest airport has been plagued by overcrowding in recent years. By handling all British Airways traffic through one terminal, it is hoped that the strain on Heathrow will be alleviated.

British Airways asserts that the Terminal Five building will offer a new area in air travel and is built on one idea: to make travel simple and enjoyable again.
