A record number of Brits are planning to go abroad to do their Christmas shopping this year, it has been reported.

Alpharooms, a holiday accommodation site, has found that UK shoppers plan to head overseas to find unusual or lower-priced gifts as well as hoping to escape the stress of Christmas shopping on the UK high street.

World First reports that the most popular places for Brits to flash the cash abroad are Cologne, Berlin and Budapest, with shoppers in their thousands heading to New York during the festive season.

Gareth Hockey, marketing manager of Alpharooms, said that shoppers see that there are "real bargains" to be had abroad.

Those who plan to shop abroad this Christmas should ensure they have the right travel insuranceto cover for any breakages or damage to their new purchases.

In related news, NMA reports that Christmas shoppers are more likely to purchase presents online than go to the shops this year, according to a survey by the E-Customer Service index. Of those surveyed, 68 per cent said they planned to buy online this Christmas.
