Dozens of Liverpool FC fans who had been looking forward to travelling to Athens for the Champions League final were left heartbroken when their flight was cancelled.

Around 150 fans had their Jet Time Airways flight from John Lennon Airport cancelled at the last minute.

The cancellation followed a number of delays and technical faults with the aircraft.

Robin Tudor, airport spokesman, told the Guardian: "It is particularly disappointing for us… As it has been a fantastic morning with a great atmosphere among all the fans travelling to Greece.

"Due to unforeseen circumstances, the last flight was cancelled and this has left 150 fans absolutely devastated, quite understandably so."

And the heartache continued as the left behind fans had to watch their team lose to 2-1 to AC Milan, unable to repeat the feat of lifting the cup two years ago.

Despite dominating for most of the match, a last-minute header from Dirk Kuyt was not enough to match veteran Filippo Inzaghi's double.

Commenting on the defeat, captain Steven Gerrard said: "We gave everything but it wasn't to be tonight and certainly this feels the complete opposite to what it was like after Istanbul."
