Police today issued a warning that remote central locking devices may pose a security risk.
Kent Police issued their statement after a recent spate of thefts and advised drivers to be more vigilant.
Thieves, the police warned, are using electronic devices to block signals between key fobs and cars.
Detective Inspector Paul Cordier said: "While most modern cars use flashing headlights or indicators to show that the vehicle is secure, many motorists simply point and press their remote and walk away without physically checking."
He added: "We strongly recommend that drivers try their door handles to check their car is locked before leaving it, and ensure that any valuables, such as satellite navigation or mobile phones are removed."
Detective Inspector Cordier also warned that the recent increases in radio transmitting devices "means that signals from one device may counteract signals from another
leaving cars insecure and vulnerable to car thieves".
Having a car stolen can incur a variety of additional costs alongside having to replace the vehicle itself.
The Times recently reported that, even if a stolen car is recovered, the police will charge the owners £105 in order to have the theft investigated.
Motorists need to ensure that they have good cover for their vehicle, which will prove vital should you become a victim of car theft.
