The average cost of retirement could reach as much £1.3 million per person if inflation and increased longevity continue unabated, Life Trust has suggested.

Research from the group has shown that currently, usual costs of living beyond working age stand at £413,000 for a typical household, while it costs someone living alone £326,700.

The group noted that while men are currently expected to live to 85 and women to 88, this is expected to rise considerably in the future, placing a greater burden on those planning for the future.

Andy Briscoe, chief executive officer of Life Trust, stated: "People are living longer, healthier lives. This is great news but only if people have the finances in place to really enjoy their post-career years."

Last month, Life Trust also published results of a study indicating that many Britons are concerned about their ability to save for their retirement.

It found that 40 per cent of those questioned worried they would not be able to support themselves if they reached their life expectancy.

InsureandGo offers competitive life insurance policies for those making provisions for the future.
