Environment secretary Hillary Benn has announced a review that will look at the lessons that were learnt during the recent June floods.

The floods struck mainly in the Midlands and Yorkshire and have left thousands of homeowners without a roof over their heads.

The Lessons Learned review will be carried out by the Cabinet Office with support from Defra and Communities and Local Government.

It will look at flood risk management and emergency responses during the floods, as well as compiling views from those affected to those who had to respond to and manage the crisis.

Mr Benn commented that the circumstances behind the tragic loss of four lives as well as the 37,000 properties affected would be investigated.

But he also praised the response from the emergency services, local authorities and voluntary sector as "very impressive".

The review will look at whether those affected had been properly informed beforehand of the possible risks of flooding, where the scale and impact of the flooding could have been mitigated and to provide further recommendations to ensure a better preparation for the future.

It is expected that the initial findings of the review will be finished by the end of this year, at which point it will be turned into a formal government report.
